In the 15th century three buildings were standing here: a "kophus" (department store), which served mainly the trade, a tower - called Burgfrieden, among other things the town's armoury - and an open court alcove that served for the dispensation of justice.

In its nearly 500-years existence the building experienced again and againminor corrections. It's worthtaking a closer look.

Impressive are the three gables in the west, north and east. The decoration with the most diverse elaborations like city arms, trade symbols or signs of zodiac were done between 1936 and 1938 in a so-called "Sgraffito" plaster technique.

Hereby several different coloured plasters are being layered on and through specific scraping ornamented.

This kind of decoration is by far longer lasting than just paint especially at outdoor walls.

At the town halls' north-east corner an elegant gentlemen with shield, sword and flag keeps guard over town and place - the Holy Mauritius, patron saint of the archbishopric and donated at the inauguration of the then sovereign archbishop Ernstof Magdeburg.
The figure is a true copy of the original, which can be viewed at the Town Museum Abtshof.

The town hall's beauty can also be seen in the interior most of all in the so-calledsovereign's room.

The name came about because in the Middle Ages the different monarchs held their conference here.

Spontaneous sightseeing is unfortunately not possible. The town hall still serves today as town administration and a guided tour will have to be booked via the Stadtinformation (0 33 72 / 46 31 13).
